Course Description

Thank you for your interest in rules courses offered by the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, Inc. (IAABO), the premier basketball officiating organization in the world!

The course consists of two parts – the rules portion and the mechanics portion. The total cost is $75. Once you’ve paid, you will be able to access the rules course immediately with the username and password you set up during registration. You can go through the material at your own pace, as you have time.

If you have any questions about course content, rules or mechanics, please contact me, Donnie Eppley, at deppley@iaabo.org, and I will point you in the right direction.

If you have technical issues with the online course platform, please contact Joe Gabriel at joe.gabriel@comcast.net.

The Rules Course

From the time you enroll, you will have 90 days to complete the course and successfully pass the 50-question IAABO University rules exam.

The rules course is comprised of 20 straightforward and easy-to-follow lessons. After you’ve reviewed the slides in a lesson, there is a quiz to take. You will need to score 80% or higher on each quiz before you can proceed to the next lesson.

A full, detailed description of the rules course, its structure, and test requirements are included in the introductory lesson called “Navigating the IAABO University Course.”

The Mechanics Course

Once you pass the IAABO University exam, you will receive notice within 48 hours of your enrollment in the Crew of Two Mechanics Course.

Access to the Mechanics Course is contingent upon completion of the Rules Course.

You will have forty-five (45) days to complete the Mechanics Course and pass the mechanics exam with a score of at least 80%. Throughout both courses, you will have digital access to the IAABO Rules Guide and IAABO Manual.

After Passing Both Exams

Once you’ve passed both exams, a local board representative will advise you of any additional costs for floor training, as well as the dues for joining your local board.

Please note: this could be as much as $125 in addition to the $75 paid to enroll in IAABO University. We do not recommend that you officiate any games until you are a member of the local board of basketball officials.

You do not become a certified official until you’ve completed all of the necessary steps outlined by your local board; IAABO University is just the first step. Please understand that until you become a registered member of IAABO, you do not have general liability insurance coverage and would be putting yourself at risk if you officiate games.
