Course Description
Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of IAABO, the greatest basketball officiating organization in the world! The cost for our online high school program is $75 and consists of two courses – the Rules Course and Mechanics Course.
The first step is the Rules Course. It consists of twenty (20) lessons and quizzes along with two (2) practice exams aimed at preparing you to successfully complete the IAABO applicant exam. While passing the exam does not ensure that you will be an outstanding official, rules knowledge is fundamental to being a successful official.
Each lesson in the Rules Course is followed by a quiz to reinforce the information you’ve learned. You must score an 80 or higher on each lesson quiz before you can move on to the next lesson. After you’ve completed all twenty lessons, you will be able to take the IAABO applicant exam. You will have sixty (60) minutes to complete the 50-question final exam. You must earn a score of 80 or better (40 or more correct answers) to pass this exam. This is a self-paced course with a 90-day window to complete the course and final exam from the time you register.
Once you successfully complete the Rules Course, you will automatically be enrolled in the appropriate Mechanics Course for your area, which is the second portion of our program. Access to the mechanics course is contingent upon completion of the rules course. Throughout both courses, you will have digital access to the IAABO Rules Guide and the IAABO Manual.
The Mechanics Course is also composed of twenty (20) lessons, with five review questions at the end of each one. Like the Rules Course, there is a 50-question final exam that you will need to pass with a score of 80 or higher. Upon successful completion of both courses and exams, you will be eligible to join a local IAABO Board, subject to any additional dues and requirements of that Board.
While the Rules Course closes after you successfully pass the exam, you will be able to access the Mechanics Course for ten (10) months from the time you start it, to allow you the opportunity to review it as needed throughout your first season.

You may return to a topic for review any time during the course after you’ve completed the lesson, but you will not be able to skip ahead.
